Chandigarh police claim to bust drug smugglers’ gang
November 21st, 2009 - 11:09 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Nov 21 (IANS) Chandigarh police Saturday claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of drug smugglers after arresting two men and recovering contraband from their possession.
According to police, they laid a trap here in Sector 47 after getting a tip-off.
Two men were arrested and police claimed to have seized two kg of opium worth Rs.12 lakh from their possession.
“We have got a major breakthrough by arresting these two persons. They were active in drug peddling business in this region for the last few months. We are hoping to make more recovery and to arrest more culprits after their interrogation,” J.S. Khera, deputy superintendent of police (south), Chandigarh, told reporters.
The arrested men were identified as Ashwani Kumar, a resident of neighbouring Panchkula town and Balbir Singh, resident of Chandigarh. Police also impounded the Maruti car in which they were travelling.
They have been booked under various sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
