Chandigarh, June 30 (IANS) Four people were arrested here Tuesday with arms and cash, police said, adding that they were members of an inter-state gang of highway robbers operating in Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
Four revolvers, 25 live cartridges, a Maruti Swift car and Rs.464,000 in cash were recovered from them, police said.

“Today we got a tip-off that four people who were involved in a robbery at a shop in Ludhiana in Punjab were coming to Chandigarh, carrying illegal arms and the cash looted and that they were planning a similar robbery in Chandigarh,” Inspector General of Police S.K. Jain told reporters.

“We then put up a police check-post in Sector 42. A white Maruti Swift car with a Punjab registration number was intercepted by our commandos and members of the special Crime Investigation Cell and the accused were arrested on the spot,” he added.

The four accused are Jai Pal Singh, a resident of Ferozepur town in Punjab and the kingpin of the gang, Harinder Singh, son of a Chandigarh police official, Gurshahid Singh Pawar of Ferozepur and Harjot Singh from Ludhiana, according to police.

“During the interrogation, they have admitted their involvement in various robberies on national highways, at banks and jewellery shops, carjacking and kidnapping,” added Jain.

They were also involved in the robbery at a gun house in Hoshiarpur in Punjab, around 100 km from here, in April, police said.

Three members of this gang had been arrested by the Haryana police June 5 and 85 weapons, large amounts of ammunition and two luxury cars were recovered from them.
