April 28th, 2011 - 1:16 am ICT by IANSChandigarh, April 27 (IANS) Acting on a court order, the Chandigarh Police Wednesday arrested the owner of a leading overseas educational consultant in a case of cheating and forgery, police said.
According to the police, the accused, Naresh Gulati, chief executive officer of Oceanic Consultants Australia (OCA), was produced in the court Wednesday and sent to one-day police remand.
The company is worth Australian $150 million with offices spread across India, Australia, New Zealand and Britain.
Gulati’s wife Shalini has accused him of forging her signatures and transferring the company’s shares, worth over Rs.11.5 crore, in the name of his mother Sharda Gulati, police said.
Earlier Shalini had filed a complaint against her husband and mother-in-law with the police, but on seeing no reaction, she approached the court in January.
“We arrested Naresh from his house today (Wednesday). The interrogation is on and we will try to get an extended police remand from the court,” said a Chandigarh police official.
Gulati and Shalini were married in 1997 and have two children. However, they have been living separately since March 2010 and their divorce case is pending in court.
Gulati refuted all the allegations.
“All the allegations made against me are not only incorrect but also part of a well-planned attempt to tarnish my reputation. The matter has been pending with the court and I have been actively cooperating with the police in investigation.
“I have full faith in the law and I am very sure that the truth will eventually come to surface,” Gulati said here Wednesday.
OCA is one of the prominent overseas education consultants and has sent over 10,000 students abroad, majority of them to Australia, for higher studies.
Besides, students’ recruitment, OCA is also running two more business ventures in business process outsourcing and software.
