New Delhi, Jan 10 (IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Tuesday urged the central government to declare the cyclone affected areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as “calamity hit areas”.

This should be done under the purview of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) so that it can immediately take steps to provide funds for relief and rehabilitation efforts, it said.

A CPI-M statement said: “It is not possible to repair the damage and provide adequate rehabilitation without central assistance on a large scale.”

Cyclone Thane hit the northeastern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu Dec 30 causing largescale devastation to life and property in Cuddalore and damage all the way from Nagapattinam to Villipuram districts.

Puducherry was also hit. Paddy crops, cashew plantations and other crops were destroyed. Thousands of electric transformers were knocked out. Power and water supply were cut off.

Lakhs of houses were destroyed and more than one million people were now sheltering in camps.
