Centre to write to states to check honour killings: Tirath
June 16th, 2010 - 11:23 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 16 (IANS) Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath Wednesday said that the central government will ask the states to check the increasing cases of honour killing.
“I will write to the states, specially Haryana, to check the increasing incidents of honour killing,” Tirath said.
The minister was reacting to a recent case of honour killing in Delhi.
“It is a social evil. Law does not bar anyone from marrying within or out of a community or group. No one cam take law in their hands,” Tirath said.
“Khap panchayats are not identified by law,” she added.
A couple was tortured to death Monday in the national capital by the girl’s family, who were opposed to their marriage as they belonged to different castes.
