Chandigarh, July 10 (IANS) The Punjab government has decided to set up centralized kitchens through NGOs for supplying quality mid-day meals to students in government schools, a minister said Sunday.

State Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan said Sunday that in the first phase, the centralized kitchens will be set up in eight districts — Patiala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Bathinda, Mohali, Sangrur and Moga.

He said that, as per requirements, more than one centralized kitchen could be established in each district.

These kitchens will provide mid-day meals for students in primary (Classes 1 to 5) and upper primary schools (Classes 6 to 8) within the municipal limits of the eight districts.

The mid-day meal is being provided to over 18 lakh students in the state.

Sekhwan pointed out that during his recent tour of the state, it was noticed that the schools were witnessing difficulties in running this scheme as there were problems ranging from lack of experienced cooks and refilling of cooking gas cylinders.

He expressed confidence that with the new arrangement, not only would the kitchens be more hygienic but the inspection of cooked food could be undertaken at a single spot, resulting in saving of time and expenditure.
