CBI seeks enhanced security for Gujarat cop in jail
August 23rd, 2010 - 10:49 pm ICT by IANSAhmedabad, Aug 23 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Monday sought enhanced security in jail for former deputy superintendent of police N.K. Amin whose plea for turning approver in the Sohrabuddin-Kausarbi murder case is awaiting court orders.
The petition was filed by the premier investigating agency before the special CBI court in the wake of an attempted contract killing conspiracy on the life of Amin which came to light recently.
The court has fixed hearing on the petition for Aug 26 and ordered the Sabarmati jail authorities to ensure Amin’s security till the court disposes off the petition.
The Amin assassination plot came to light after one Shakeel Shaikh filed an application before the Vadodara court for jail transfer citing security reasons in the Sabarmati central jail. He claimed that Sabarmati jail authorities had offered him Rs.10 lakh for eliminating Narendra Amin, and on his refusal to accept the “offer” he was mercilessly beaten up and his right arm was fractured by the jail police officers.
He also claimed he was threatened against disclosing the matter to anyone.
Shakeel was arrested in connection with some rioting case in Vadodara in 2006 and was lodged in the prison there. Subsequently he was shifted to the Sabarmati central jail after being classed as dangerous. When brought to Vadodara for his case, he filed the plea. Amin is already on record about his imperilled safety from other co-accused who have opposed his application for turning approver.
He had sought transfer to another prison from Sabarmati jail, Ahmedabad. The court had ordered the jail authorities to provide two armed home guard jawans but refused his transfer plea. The CBI has now moved the court with an enhanced security plea.
The Sabarmati jail authorities have, however, termed Shakeel’s claim as a figment of his imagination. Former deputy commissioner of police Abhay Chudasama had also expressed similar apprehension and the CBI court had permitted his transfer to Nadiad jail.
