CBI recommends case against former Chandigarh official
December 8th, 2010 - 12:07 am ICT by IANSChandigarh, Dec 7 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recommended a criminal case against a Haryana bureaucrat, earlier serving with the Chandigarh administration, for his role in a teachers recruitment scam that made headlines here last year, CBI sources said here Tuesday.
The CBI has sought the sanction from its head office in New Delhi to register the case against Haryana Civil Services (HCS) officer Samvartak Singh Khangwal, who was posted as director of Public Instruction (DPI) here last year, on charges of misusing the official position, corruption and connivance with two touts.
Khangwal was repatriated to Haryana after his role in the Union Territory teachers’ recruitment scam came to light.
The sources said that the CBI had prepared a nearly 900-page report into the teachers recruitment scam, which included hundreds of mobile phone conversations between Khangwal and the two touts, Jolly Singh and Hardev Singh.
The touts had contacted several aspirants for government school teachers’ posts and offered to help them in recruitment if they paid bribes between Rs.300,000 to Rs.500,000.
Rules and selection criteria was changed during the recruitment process to favour some aspirants while the meritorious ones were eased out.
