April 28th, 2010 - 10:22 pm ICT by IANSGandhinagar, April 28 (IANS) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Wednesday arrested deputy commissioner of Ahmedabad police Abhay Chudasama in connection with the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh shootout, taking the number of cops held in the case to 15. CBI Deputy Inspector General (DIG) P. Kandaswamy said Chudasama, 44, a 1999 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was one of the conspirators who abducted Sohrabuddin and his wife Kauserbi.
He is the fourth IPS officer to be arrested in connection with the case.
“Chudasama has been concertedly influencing important witnesses to conceal true facts and to give false statements to the CBI hence he has been arrested today (Wednesday) on the oral testimony of witnesses and material objects,” the CBI stated.
The IPS officer was the district superintendent of police, Valsad in south Gujarat before his present posting in Ahmedabad’s crime branch.
Three other IPS officers are in jail for the killing of Sheikh and the mysterious death of his wife Kauserbi. They are DIG D.G. Vanzara, Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian and Rajasthan cadre IPS officer M.N. Dinesh.
Eleven other policemen are also in the dock in the case.
