Catch a monkey, win Rs.500
October 18th, 2011 - 8:37 pm ICT by IANSShimla, Oct 18 (IANS) The Himachal Pradesh government is offering Rs.500 for every monkey that is trapped. And officials said the hill state has an estimated 300,000 monkeys.
Desperate to overcome the monkey invasion, the government Tuesday decided to sterilize 200,000 monkeys by June 30 next year.
“The cabinet has decided to check the monkey menace more effectively by setting up 25 sterilization centres across the state. These will be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment,” said an official statement.
People trapping monkeys will be given Rs.500 for each animal, it said.
Around 300,000 monkeys target mainly cereal and fruit crops in the hill state. Farmers are the worst sufferers.
