Castration most befitting punishment for rapists: Court
February 17th, 2012 - 10:47 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Feb 17 (IANS) Castration is the most befitting punishment for a paedophile or serial rape offender, a Delhi court said while sentencing a rape convict to life sentence.
Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau awarded life imprisonment to the convict, Nandan for raping his six-year-old maternal niece in April 2011.
Judge Lau, highlighting her earlier judgement, said Friday: “In my considered opinion castration is the most befitting sentence which can be imposed on any paedophile or serial offender.”
She added that since Indian legislators are yet to explore this as an alternative to the conventional sentencing, the hands of the court are tied.
“After all, society cannot afford to have live sex bombs, who if let loose are potential threat to the society particularly to women and children,” said judge Lau.
The court directed the Delhi government to grant compensation to the tune of Rs.2 lakh to the victim for her medical expenses.
The court said the victim at the time of the incident was hardly aged six years. She is presently residing in Rajasthan and has not yet recovered from the trauma and is under constant medical care.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs.40,000 on the convict.
The court observed that Nandan abducted the girl from her parents in order to rape her.
The court has also observed that some previous incidents regarding the misbehaviour of Nandan with other female members of his own family had been suppressed by the family perhaps to save their own honour.
