Lucknow, May 17, 2008 (IANS) Lucknow Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Bal Mukund Saturday directed Senior Superintendent of Police Akhil Kumar to register a case against the superintendent of police (west), the circle officer of Chowk and an inspector in Wazirganj in connection with the alleged police assault on lawyers at the Uttar Pradesh capital here. The order came on a writ petition filed by Lucknow Bar Association secretary G.N. Shukla.

In the petition Shukla had alleged that police unnecessarily manhandled and cane-charged the lawyers last Wednesday while they were demonstrating peacefully in protest against the death of a fellow lawyer in Allahabad.

A member of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association, 45-year-old S.P. Awasthi, who had been sentenced in a contempt case, died in police custody last Tuesday.

Lawyers in several parts of the state including Lucknow, Allahabad and Varanasi took to the streets in protest against Awasthi’s death.
