Capital shivers, fog disrupts trains, flights (Third Lead)
December 19th, 2011 - 10:36 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 19 (IANS) It was a cold start to the week for Delhiites Monday with the minimum temperature falling three notches below average at 5 degrees Celsius. A dense fog added to the woes as low visibility hampered movement of air, rail and road traffic.
The city woke up to a dense fog. At 8.30 a.m., the visibility was reduced to 200 metres, and road traffic was forced to slow down to a crawl.
According to a railway official, 29 trains were cancelled and over 40 were delayed due to fog.
“Over 40 trains were running behind schedule by several hours and 29 trains have been cancelled. Dense fog across many parts of north India today (Monday) affected rail services,” a Northern Railway spokesperson said.
“The departure of four trains from Delhi has been rescheduled due to dense fog,” he added.
The fog also disrupted operations at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport, with several flights getting delayed by 20 to 40 minutes.
“Low visibility procedure (LVP) was implemented due to fog. While 242 flights operated under CAT-I (category-I instrument landing system) ILS, 10 flights operated in CAT-II, one flight operated in CAT-IIIA and 36 flights under CAT-III B,” Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said in a statement.
DIAL officials did not divulge any figures as to how many flights were delayed.
According to an official, no flights were cancelled or diverted.
“I had a tough time steering through the fog. But this is just the beginning. It might get worse as the temperature dips,” said Vivek Shukla, a school cab driver.
“Monday’s minimum temperature was 5 degrees Celsius, three notches below the average for this time of the season,” an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
While the maximum temperature was recorded at 21.9 degrees — one notch below average, the humidity wavered between a high of 97 and a low of 39 percent.
There will be fog Tuesday morning but the sky will remain clear during the day.
The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 22 and 7 degrees, respectively.
