Cancer patient commits suicide in Lucknow hospital
September 8th, 2010 - 6:19 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Sep 8 (IANS) A terminally-ill cancer patient allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at a government-run hospital in the Uttar Pradesh capital Wednesday, police said.
Fifty-year-old Anjani Patel, suffering from an advanced stage of throat cancer, hanged himself from the ceiling of the bathroom of the Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS).
“Preliminary investigations reveal Anjani was mentally depressed because of his illness and falling health, and that could have prompted him to take the extreme step,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Tribhuvan Tripathi told reporters here.
“Anjani, who was admitted to the gastro-medicine department of the SGPGIMS, used his ‘gamcha’ (cotton towel) to hang himself from the ceiling. His body was spotted by some of the patients in the ward,” he added.
Patel was a native of Sidhi district in Madhya Pradesh.
