Ottawa, April 7 (IANS) The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled two collector coins to commemorate the wedding of Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton.
“The beautifully designed collector coins created by the mint will give Canadians, royal watchers and collectors everywhere exceptional keepsakes by which to remember this historic event,” Ian E. Bennett, president and chief executive officer of the Royal Canadian Mint, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
The 25-cent nickel plated steel coin depicts a photograph of the happy couple, and the 20-Canadian dollar pure silver coin features a sapphire-coloured crystal enhancement symbolising the sapphire engagement ring which William presented to Kate last October.
On the reverse side of the silver coin is an engraving of the couple, designed by Canadian artist and coin designer Laurie McGaw of Guelph, Ontario.
And the “face” side of the coin features a portrait of William’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, created by Canadian portrait artist Susanna Blunt in 2003.
The two coins go on sale on the same day of the ceremony - April 29 - with retail prices of 104.95 Canadian dollars and 25.95 Canadian dollars for the 20-dollar and 25-cent coins respectively.
The 20-dollar silver coin is limited to 25,000 worldwide.
