Bangalore, April 7 (IANS) Campaigning for the April 9 bypolls to three Karnataka assembly seats ended Thursday, with yesteryears actor Hema Malini and Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi adding glamour to the poll rallies of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress respectively.
The BJP, the Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular are locked in three-cornered contests for the three seats - Jagalur in Davangere district, Bangarpet in Kolar, and Channapatna in Ramanagaram.
The bypolls follow resignation of Congress members from Jagalur and Bangarpet and JD-S member from Channapatna. All three quit their seats and their parties to join the BJP.
Hema Malini campaigned Wednesday for the BJP in Bangarpet while Chiranjeevi did Thursday for the Congress. Bangarpet has a large number of Tamil and Telugu speakers.
Corruption charges against BJP Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa dominated the Congress and the JD-S’ campaigns. Yeddyurappa and BJP focused on deveopment work since the party came to power in the state for the first time in May 2008.
Counting of votes will take place May 13 along with tallying of ballots in the assembly polls being held in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
