Bus runs over elderly woman in Kolkata, locals on rampage
March 14th, 2010 - 7:28 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Kolkata, March 14 (IANS) An elderly woman was run over by a speeding bus in Kolkata Sunday following which locals went on a rampage torching and damaging vehicles, police said.
According to police sources, the accident took place near Hindustan Park area at Gariahat. The bus lost control and hit a 70-year-old woman whose identity has not yet been established.
“Angry locals set two buses on fire and also damaged seven other buses after the accident. Two fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames,” a police officer said.
A huge contingent of city police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel was deployed at Gariahat area to bring the situation under control.
“Five people have been arrested in connection with the incident,” the officer added.
