BTS cannot lower fares due to loss of revenueNovember 23rd, 2007 - 12:32 pm ICT by admin
Bangkok, November 23 (PRD), The President of the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), Mr. Khiri Kanchanapas (คีรี กาญจนพาสน์), says political parties may have the right to convince public members to vote for them by saying they will lower the BTS fares, but to determine whether such plan is implementable is another case.
Mr. Khiri says the state sector has to support the business operators, if the government wants to lower the BTS fares. He says the BTS and the Bangkok Metro Public Company Limited (BMCL) are currently experiencing loss of profits, and the current fares are not as high as set. Besides, promotions have been carried out for more people to use the sky-train.
The BTS President says the number of BTS passengers has increased by six percent, but the amount is still lower than the company’s forecast by four percent. He says about 450,000 BTS tickets have been purchased on a daily basis, and his company is expected to be listed in the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) next year.
