BSF troopers suspended for torture, inquiry on
January 19th, 2012 - 4:07 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 19 (IANS) In the wake of a video showing a man being stripped and beaten along the India-Bangladesh border, the government Thursday said the Border Security Force (BSF) has suspended all eight troopers involved and ordered a probe into the incident.
“BSF has taken prompt action to suspend BSF jawans involved in the incident and full investigations have been ordered into the matter,” Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson of the external affairs ministry, said while reacting to the incident.
The comment came after several TV channels showed a five-minute video showing a man, reportedly a Bangladeshi national, being tortured by allegedly BSF personnel in Murshidabad district in West Bengal along the India-Bangladesh border.
The suspended BSF personnel are constables Virender Tiwari, V.S. Victor, Dhananjay Kumar, Anand Singh, Amar Jyoti, Sanjeev Kumar, Suresh Chand and Sunil Kumar.
The India-Bangladesh border has seen attempts at infiltration and smuggling from time to time. Last month, the BSF personnel had to fire on some miscreants coming in from Bangladesh. At that time, India had regretted casualties, but had clarified that the BSF fired to repulse miscreants and urged Dhaka to work jointly to control cross-border illegal activities.
