British minister jeered for not banning circus animals acts

London, May 20 (IANS) While people are showing growing concern for animal acts in circus shows, Britain’s junior environment minister has drawn flak for saying these cannot be banned due to human rights law, a media report said.

British Minister Jim Paice provoked jeers in the House of Commons (Thursday) as he tried to justify imposing only a licensing system instead, the Daily Express reported Friday.

The environment department was expected to outlaw use of wild animals for entertainment.

Paice said the legal advice was that a total ban “might well be seen as disproportionate action under the European Union Services Directive and under our own Human Rights Act.”

Green MP Caroline Lucas said Paice’s position was “extraordinarily cowardly”.
