Islamabad, April 23 (IANS) The British government could not execute an arrest warrant against former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf due to the absence of an extradition treaty between the two countries, a court was informed.
The warrant was issued by an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi city against Musharraf in the assassination case of former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
Chief prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar presented a written reply in the court sent by the British home department in this regard, the Online news agency reported Saturday.
Zulfiqar told the court that the warrant was forwarded to the British home department and the Pakistan high commission. The British officials’ reply to the Pakistani interior ministry has been submitted in the court, he said.
He said Musharraf is aware of the proceedings and was hesitating to appear in the court. He prayed to the court that Musharraf be declared a proclaimed offender.
Musharraf has been in a self-imposed exile in Britain since stepping down as president in 2008.
The hearing was adjourned till May 7.
