Hyderabad, April 18 (IANS) A day after a rape incident shocked Hyderabad, police arrested the boyfriend of the 18-year-old college student for raping her and clarified it was not a gang rape.

Venkatesh, working as the driver of a commercial tax officer, allegedly drugged the girl, raped her and later threw her out of a car near a church in Narayanguda, from where he had picked her up earlier.

Police investigations revealed that Venkatesh took her to the cellar of the commercial tax office building and raped her there.

The girl, who was staying in an old-age home with her blind mother, had gone to the church with her for prayers. She was later found near the church, profusely bleeding.

While the girl’s mother was sitting in the church, she went out after receiving a call on her mobile phone.

Police arrested Vankatesh after verifying the girl’s call details.

Earlier in the day, women’s organisations staged protests in different parts of the city demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits and strong punishment to them.

Leaders of political parties also came to meet the victim at the Government Maternity Hospital.

Former chief minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu announced financial assistance of Rs.50,000 for the girl. He said the NTR Trust will also bear all her educational expenses.
