New Delhi, March 14 (IANS) In a shocking incident, a 10-year-old boy was killed after being set on fire for demanding compensation from members of a wedding party who were travelling in a car that hit his bicycle. The incident occurred late Thursday in Alipur in north Delhi, when Sanjeev’s bicycle was hit by a Qualis car carrying a wedding party from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.

According to eyewitnesses, when Sanjeev demanded compensation for his damaged bicycle, the men first abused him and then dragged him to a nearby field.

The men, who were reportedly drunk, dumped the boy on a heap of cow dung patties and set it ablaze.

The villagers, who rushed to douse the flames, found the buy’s half burnt body.

“They were drunk and set my son on fire. Police must arrest the killers or we would not spare them,” Vijender Singh, the victim’s inconsolable father said.

Hundreds of villagers staged a demonstration at the Alipur police station and stopped the marriage. They also blocked the Delhi-Chandigarh highway for hours in protest.

Following police intervention, the blockades were removed and the victim’s body was sent to the Babu Jagjeevan Ram Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

“We have registered a case of murder and have sent teams to Meerut to find the members of the wedding party. Five people have been detained and further investigations are underway,” said Assistant commissioner of Police (ACP) Dinesh Kumar.

The situation in the area continued to be tense Friday and police deployed additional forces to prevent any untoward incident.
