Bolt disqualified for false start in 100m in Daegu; Blake wins
August 28th, 2011 - 8:36 pm ICT by IANSDaegu (South Korea), Aug 28 (IANS) Usain Bolt of Jamaica, the world’s fastest man and defending champion, was dramatically disqualified from the men’s 100m final after a false start at the World Athletics Championships Sunday night, which took the fully-packed Daegu Stadium and the world by a huge surprise.
The men’s 100m final took place at 11.45 GMT Sunday. Bolt and his compatriots Yohan Blake and Nesta Carter, as well as the other five sprinters entered the 66,422-seat stadium amid thunderous cheers and applause.
After about five minutes of warmup, Bolt took to Lane 5 of the blue track and was ready to storm ahead, Xinhua reported.
Then an unexpected scene occurred. Bolt falsely commenced his start before the gun was fired. He sprinted away several meters and took off his shirt, obviously realizing that he would be disqualified.
With a face of pain and regret, Bolt was out, marking a dramatic ending to his ambition to snatch another sprint double in the 100m and 200m, after his legendary wins in Berlin two years ago.
Bolt left the track, but his two teammates were still formidable.
After the restart, Blake bagged the gold medal in 9.92 seconds, which was his personal season’s best. Walter Dix of the US took the silver with 10.08 sec.
Kim Collins of Saint Kitts and Nevis collected the bronze medal in 10.09 seconds.
Collins, born in April 1976, became the oldest 100m medalist at the World Championships.
The 100m final was held with a relatively strong head wind, which is detrimental to sprinters’ performance. Data released by the IAAF showed the head wind was 1.4 meters per second.
That means, if there were no head wind, the 21-year-old Blake could have a better mark. The IAAF said on its website that Blake’s time would be worth 9.83 seconds in still wind.
Such a mark is better than Bolt’s season’s best of 9.88 seconds recorded in Monaco at the end of July.
