Body of Noida lawyer slain by husband found

Noida, April 24 (IANS) The Noida police Thursday recovered the body of a local woman lawyer, who was missing from her home since April 3, from a ditch in Haryana’s Hodel town. The woman had become a lawyer to free her husband of criminal charges, but was brutally killed by him because she refused to discontinue her law yer. Superintendent of city police Prabal Pratap Singh said Raj Kumar alias Raju April 3 forcibly took his wife Ranjana Sharma to Hodel town of Haryana and strangled her to death. He later dumped her body in a ditch along the Delhi-Agra Road.

After Ranjana went missing, the Noida Phase II police registered a criminal case and secured from the city court Raju’s custody April 18. During interrogation Raju confessed to killing his wife. The police took Raju to Hodel and recovered the lawyer’s body from a ditch in Hodel town on Mathura road, said the police official.

Ranjana and Raju were neighbours in Bhangel locality of Noida phase II. Raju was a criminal while Ranjana was a simple girl living with her parents in the same locality. They fell in love and married with the consent of their parents.

But Raju was soon arrested in connection with an armed robbery in the area. To free her husband, Ranjana studied law and became a lawyer. She started practicing as an advocate in Noida courts and succeeded in freeing her husband from charges.

After his release, she urged her husband to leave his association with criminals. But he did not improve and instead began to pressurize her to leave the practice and become a housewife, which she refused.

In the meantime, they had two children. Angry with her refusal to discontinue her law practice, Raju killed her April 4.
