Blast in Pakistan kills 10 (Lead)

Islamabad, Sep 6 (Xinhua) At least 10 people were killed and more than 40 injured in a powerful blast in northwestern Pakistan Saturday, Express TV reported.The blast took place when a car hit a police station on Kohat road of Peshawar, capital of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan, the report said.

Two buildings near the police station also collapsed under the impact of the blast and some 50 people were buried under the rubble, according to the news channel.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.

TV footage showed rescuers and passers-by helping para-medics shift the injured to hospital.

Officials said the toll could rise further in view of the condition of some of the injured.

The country’s presidential election was under way Saturday to elect a new president after the resignation of Pervez Musharraf last month.
