Blast in Haryana town: Police suspect blocked septic tank (Lead)
October 20th, 2009 - 12:19 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Jind (Haryana), Oct 20 (IANS) The police suspect a blocked septic tank caused a blast at a Muslim shrine in this Haryana town, officials said Tuesday.
The blast in Jind, about 200 km from state capital Chandigarh, took place late Monday night.
Senior police officials said that forensic and ballistic experts were called here Tuesday to investigate the incident. They believe that the septic tank, which had been closed by the shrine management, could be responsible for the blast.
Though no casualty was reported, a wall of the ‘madrassa’ (Muslim religious school) at the Idgah shrine complex collapsed after the blast. The sound of the explosion was heard by people a few kilometres away.
“Forensic experts are investigating the incident but it appears that the gas in the septic tank, which was closed, could have led to the blast,” Jind District Police Chief Satheesh Baalan said.
The police and forensic experts did not find any detonators, wires or residue of explosives around the site in their initial investigations.
The shrine management had built a room on top of the septic tank.
