Black buck deaths in Uttar Pradesh zoo remain a mystery
September 11th, 2008 - 7:07 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Sep 11 (IANS) The death of six black bucks in the last two days in the Kanpur zoo still remains a mystery, the concerned officials have admitted.”We don’t know what is ailing the black bucks. It is still a mystery,” Kanpur Zoo director K. Praveen Rao told IANS.
“While five black bucks died Tuesday, and one more died Wednesday evening,” Rao added.
As Kanpur zoo authorities are not able to ascertain the reason behind the deaths, they have sought assistance from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly.
Black bucks are protected under Schedule-I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act-1972 in India, officials said.
At present, Kanpur Zoo has about 80 of them, officials added.
In Uttar Pradesh, black bucks are mainly found in the western region. About 5,000 of them live in the wild in the state.
