Bitta’s plea for NSG security cover rejected
May 27th, 2011 - 12:52 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 26 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Thursday rejected the request of M.S. Bitta, chairman of All India Anti-Terrorist Front, seeking a direction to the central government to restore his National Security Guard (NSG) security cover.
Justice S. Muralidhar said: “The decision to withdraw the NSG cover and to require the Delhi Police to provide security cover is based on the assessment made by a committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This court lacks the competence to assess the threat perception in relation to the petitioner and his family members… .”
The home ministry had in October last year directed Delhi Police to take over the security of Bitta and withdrew the NSG commandos deployed for his protection.
Bitta was provided with NSG security cover after an explosives-laden car was detonated outside the Youth Congress office on Raisina Road here Sep 11, 1993, killing 12 people and injuring 29, including Bitta, the then Youth Congress president.
