Bihar rights panel moved over illegal cremation
May 5th, 2010 - 3:35 pm ICT by IANSPatna, May 5 (IANS) Families of three youths allegedly cremated in an illegal manner by police here have moved Bihar’s human rights commission for registration of criminal cases against policemen and officials of a hospital, commission sources said Wednesday.
A commission official said that family members of the youths killed last month by unidentified criminals alleged that the police carried out the cremation without informing them.
They are demanding registration of first information reports (FIRs) against policemen and officials of Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH), who allegedly refused to preserve the bodies, the official said.
Police officials said bodies of Santosh Kumar Gaur, his nephew Lallan Gaur and friend Rahul Vishwakarma were recovered April 28. Two bodies were recovered from Patna’s Parsa Bazar area and the third was found in the Beur police station area.
Santosh’s mother, Radhika Devi, in her complaint to the commission Wednesday accused police of illegally cremating her son and two others.
“Is there anyone to punish the policemen who cremated my son without verifying his identity,” she said.
She informed the commission that six women related to her were injured in a police baton-charge Sunday while they were protesting against the illegal cremation.
She asked why no action was taken against the PMCH officials as they allegedly failed to provide space in the morgue for her dead son till his identification.
Rahul’s brother, Ashwini Kumar, alleged that police did not wait for the victim’s identification and cremated the bodies in violation of the prescribed norms.
