Chennai, April 16 (IANS) The police Wednesday recovered the bodies of self-styled holy man V Palanisamy alias “Cigar Swamy” and his paramour Divya (25), in south Chennai here Wednesday. “Following complaints from neighbours of a foul stench, we broke open the house. We found their bodies next to each other. As there are no injuries on their person, we suspect it to be suicide. The bodies have been sent for an autopsy,” assistant commissioner of police K. Shankarapandiyan told IANS.

Palanisamy was on conditional bail following charges of fraud levelled by his first wife Chandra (50). He married another woman, Manimekalai (35), and later he had an affair with Divya, a homoeopath.

Police sources said that Palanisamy was prosecuted for allegedly cheating “devotees” by predicting their future in return for cash and gifts of packets of cigars.

“He has a son aged 22 from Chandra, and two sons aged, 13 and 11 through Manimekalai. The couple was found dead in the home of Manimekalai, who is suffering from epilepsy,” local deputy commissioner of police V. Varadharaju said.

“We suspect it to be a suicide pact between the lovers as there are no signs of foul play. Inquiries have revealed that the ‘god man’ was under pressure from his first wife Chandra,” Varadharaju added.
