New Delhi, Jan 10 (IANS) Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia signed off with an Audi Q8 in his farewell match against Bayern Munich at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here Tuesday.
During half-time, when Bayern lead-4-0, Bhutia was handed the keys to the popular SUV by Audi officials here. The friendly between the two sides was part of the Audi Football Summit and was witnessed by some 30,000 fans at the showpiece venue for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The German luxury car company is also a major shareholder in the management of the Bayern Munich.
An emotional Bhutia waved to the crowd as he walked towards the white SUV with a host of officials and photographers in tow.
“It was a dream come true for me. Never imagined that I would get such grand farewell from the Indian fans and that too against a team like Bayern Munich. The match will also be a learning experience for the Indian team as well,” he said.
Bhutia retired from international football last August after being frustrated with a spate of injuries. A part of the proceeds from the match will also be donated to the earthquake victims of Bhutia’s home state of Sikkim.
