Bhupathi exits men’s doubles; Paes through to mixed doubles semis

New York, Sept 2 (IANS) India’s Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles of Bahamas crashed out of the US Open men’s doubles with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Argentines Maximo Gonzalez and Juan Monaco in the third round.Fourth-seeded Bhupathi and Knowles converted three of the eight break points in the first set to wrap it up in 34 minutes. But in the second set Gonzalez and Monaco tightened their service and did not concede a single break point while breaking the Indo-Bahamian pair once to draw parity.

The Argentinian duo created more opportunities in the decider by putting pressure on the services of Bhupathi and Knowels. They pocketed five break points and converted two, to romp in to the quarterfinal.

Leander Paes had a good day in office as he moved into the mixed doubles semifinal with Zimbabwean Cara Black.

Fifth-seeded Paes and Black beat Czech Republic’s Vladimira Uhlirova and Martin Damm 7-5, 6-2 to set up a clash with Russia’s Nadia Petrova and Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden for a place in the final.

Paes is also in fray in men’s doubles where he teams up with Czech Lukas Dlouhy to face Robert Lindstedt of Sweden and Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in the quarterfinal Tuesday.

In the boys’ doubles first round, India’s Yuki Bhambri and Filip Krajinovic of Serbia went down to Zimbabwe’s Takanyi Garanganga and Karim-Mohamed Maamoun of Egypt 6-1, 4-6, (10-7).
