Pune, Jan 4 (IANS) Pune police in a joint operation with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Wednesday nabbed a key suspect in the case of missing Rajasthan nurse Bhanwari Devi, police here said.

“Acting on a tip off, a team of crime branch officials raided various locations in and around Pune Tuesday night. In a breakthrough this morning, the officials went to Lonavala where they arrested Bishnaram Bishnoi after raiding several locations,” Pune Commissioner of Police Meeran Borwankar told reporters here.

Bishnaram Bishnoi, the leader of a gang which is suspected to have disposed off the missing nurse’s body, was later produced in court.

“The court has given a two-day transit remand to Bishnoi, during which CBI officials will take him to Rajasthan for further questioning and investigation,” Borwankar said.

Bishnoi was allegedly the leader of a gang which is suspected to have disposed off Bhanwari Devi’s body. He was wanted by the CBI and carried a cash reward of Rs.500,000 for his capture.

The Rajasthan government had, in September last year, ordered a CBI probe into the disappearance of Bhanwari Devi. She allegedly featured in a CD in a compromising position with a state minister.

The nurse was reported missing Sep 1 and a missing complaint was lodged by her husband the next day.

The missing complaint then turned into a kidnapping case and police arrested a government contractor who had allegedly handed her over to a gang in Shekhawati region in Rajasthan.
