Bengali film producer’s wife arrested for cheating banks

Kolkata, June 30 (IANS) The wife of a Bengali film producer, accused of cheating banks to the tune of Rs.150 million, was Monday arrested here while she was about to board a train and escape. “Rashika was arrested from Sealdah Station here Monday while she was about to board the Kanchenjungha Express. She planned to go to her ancestral home in Nepal via Siliguri,” Deputy Commissioner (Detective Department) Jawed Shamim told reporters here.

Rashika’s husband, Indrajit Chatterjee, is in police custody for taking loans from several banks against a single property in 2006. He was arrested for cheating June 23.

According to the police, Rashika was in Bhubaneswar when Indrajit was arrested and she immediately fled from there.

She came to Kolkata Sunday and fearing arrest hired a cab and spent the entire day driving around the city.

“She is a equal partner-in-crime with Chatterjee. At present she is in police custody and will be produced before the court July 9,” Shamim added.

Chatterjee’s bail plea was rejected by the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court June 24 and she will remain in police custody till June 5. He was arrested Monday from Howrah district’s Kona Expressway.

“Even CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) has filed two cases against Chatterjee for similar crimes,” the official said.
