Bengal win justifies Congress-Trinamool alliance: Pranab

Kolkata, May 14 (IANS) Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Saturday said the resounding win of the Congress-Trinamool Congress combine in the West Bengal assembly elections was a justification of the decision to forge the alliance.
“This time we have got 42 out of 65 seats which we were allotted in the seat-sharing deal. Last time (2006) by contesting 294 seats we got 21. So this tally only shows the success and the realistic need of the alliance,” Mukherjee said here.
The combine won 226 seats in the 294 seat assembly
The senior Congress stalwart also asserted that the Congress will stand behind Trinamool in its efforts to develop the state.
“Today I will meet Mamata Banerjee. We will discuss her plans and agenda for development. The alliance, which was forged before the election, will remain in the process of development and growth over the next five years,” said Mukherjee.
Mukherjee expressed happiness over the success of the alliance and its ability to remove the 34-year old Left Front government in the state.
“It is good that the Left Front has been defeated. Those Congress leaders who fielded themselves as independents have lost and have been given a befitting reply,” he added.
Mukherjee also hailed the results of the Congress and its alliances in Assam and Kerala.
He said the party has accepted the results of the Tamil Nadu polls with all humility.
The Congress-DMK alliance lost badly to the AIADMK in the southern state.
