Benazir killing probe almost complete: Gilani

Islamabad, Dec 28 (IANS) The investigation into the December 2007 assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was almost complete, said Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Gilani said Tuesday at Benazir Bhutto’s mausoleum in Garhi Khuda Baksh that the investigation into her assassination was almost complete and its details would be revealed in due course of time.
“I don’t want the inquiry to be affected in any manner,” Associated Press of Pakistan quoted him as saying.
Gilani said the decision to share details of any aspect of the probe could only be made by central executive committee of the Pakistan Peoples Party.
Benazir Bhutto (1953-2007) was the first woman prime minister of Pakistan. She was twice the prime minister - 1988-90 and 1993-96 - but could not complete any term.
She was removed in 1996 as prime minister on charges of corruption, and went into self-imposed exile to Dubai in 1998. Benazir returned to Pakistan in October 2007 after an understanding with then president Pervez Musharraf. She was granted amnesty and all corruption charges were withdrawn.
She was assassinated Dec 27, 2007, after a Pakistan Peoples Party rally in Rawalpindi, just two weeks before the scheduled parliamentary elections of 2008.
An editorial in the News International Tuesday said that a commission the government set up to look into the murder has submitted a report which the PPP top brass has decided to keep a secret.
“Essentially we stand rooted at the same spot where we were in 2007. Fingers point in many directions; there is no real evidence to suggest which version is the most accurate.
“As is also true of so much else in our history, we may never learn the truth.”
