Bedlam in Tripura assembly over July protests
September 2nd, 2011 - 7:55 pm ICT by IANSAgartala, Sep 2 (IANS) The mysterious death of a youth and police baton-charge on Congress protesters in July led to an uproar in the Tripura assembly on the first day of its monsoon session Friday as the opposition disrupted proceedings, demanding resignation of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.
Congress and Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) legislators disrupted proceedings right immediately after the question hour and continued till the end of the day?s proceedings, forcing Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath to adjourn the house three times.
The house was finally adjourned for the day as the opposition refused to relent.
A 21-year-old youth was killed and 111 people, including 28 policemen and 11 journalists, injured in Agartala on July 10 and 11 in a series of clashes between the police and Congress workers, who alleged that the state adopted “prejudiced policies” towards the state’s medical students.
Noisy scenes were witnessed as opposition members, displaying photographs of violence, moved towards the speaker’s podium when he rejected an adjournment motion of Leader of Opposition Ratan Lal Nath.
Rejecting the speaker?s appeals to remain calm, the opposition legislators rushed to the podium shouting slogans.
They charged the Left Front government with trying to protect the guilty police personnel who baton-charged Congress workers July 10 and 11 in Agartala when they were protesting the state government?s “misconduct” on medical students.
After the recess, Deputy Speaker Bhanu Lal Saha, who was then presiding, announced passage of some private members? resolution on public interest issues even as the melee continued. Later, Saha finally adjourned the house for the day.
