Ferozepur (Punjab), Sep 15 (IANS) A Bangladeshi national was arrested in this border town in Punjab Monday on charges of spying in the cantonment area.“We caught Mohammed Akbar Ali following reports that he was operating here for the last two months and trying to develop contacts in the Ferozepur Cantt area,” Ferozepur district police chief Dinesh Pratap Singh said here.

Ali was caught while roaming near the Hussainiwala bridge, close to the India-Pakistan border.

Ferozepur Cantt is home to a big frontier army base along India’s border with Pakistan.

The police later searched the room where Ali was staying and found documents related to defence establishments.

Police investigations revealed that Ali had crossed into India from the Tripura border. He is believed to be working for a Pakistani intelligence agency, according to police officials. Ali could have been sent on a bigger mission in the area by his mentors in Pakistan, an official said.
