Bangladesh wants India to increase rail links
February 18th, 2011 - 11:11 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS) Bangladesh has asked India to expedite the establishment of more rail links between the two countries.This was conveyed by the visiting chairman of Bangladesh’s parliamentary standing committee on ministry of foreign affairs, A.H. Mahmood Ali to Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna during a meeting here Thursday.
“Attaching great importance to enhanced transport connectivity in the region, Chairman, Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs requested for reestablishment of rail connectivity at Chilahati-Haldibari and Kulaura-Mahishashon between the two neighbours,” said a press release issued by the Bangladesh High Commission here Friday.
The senior Bangladeshi politician was in India to participate in a two-day ministerial conference of Least Developed Countries.
According to the press note, Mahmood Ali also raised the issue of early early operationalization of the Rohanpur-Singhabad rail link and dual gauge conversion of the Parbatipur-Birol rail section.
“He highlighted that passenger coach factory in Saidpur could be modernized with Indian support under the $1 billion credit line,” said the press release.
Besides, both sides also discussed the proposal of connectivity to Nepal and Bhutan over India as well as usage of Chittagong port as a regional hub of connectivity.
The Bangladeshi leader also raised the issue of India’s Border Security Force allegedly shooting Bangladeshi citizens without any provocation.
