Dhaka, April 17 (IANS) Bangladesh Sunday observed the formation of a provisional government when it was still a part of Pakistan and when the flag of an emerging free country was hoisted for the first time.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed a wreath at the place where disloyal troops in 1975 gunned down her family, including her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was the leading light of the freedom movement.
Those elected from then East Pakistan in the November 1970 general election gathered at Baidyanathtala, a mango grove at Meherpur in western region that was later named Mujibnagar.
Leading lights of the provincial government forged close links with India after Pakistani troops seized Mujibur Rahman and made him a prisoner.
Once Pakistan cracked down on the independence movement in East Pakistan, New Delhi was the first country to recognise the provincial government — giving it the legitimacy it badly needed.
The Pakistani crackdown in then East Pakistan eventually led to the 1971 India-Pakistan war and to Bangladesh’s independence.
