New Delhi, Jan 8 (IANS) Ahead of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India, Dhaka has assured New Delhi that its territory will not be used by anti-India elements.
This was revealed by External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna here Friday.
“We have been assured that Bangladesh territory will not be used by elements inimical to India while we pursue mutually beneficial relationship,” Krishna said at the annual conclave of the Indian diaspora.
Krishna also hailed the development of multi-party democracy in Bangladesh as “a positive development”.
Stepping cooperation in counter-terrorism will be among important issues on the table when Sheikh Hasina arrives here Sunday night on a three-day visit, her first to India after sweeping the December 2008 elections.
India and Bangladesh will ink three key agreements, including crucial pacts to combat terrorism and exchanging prisoners, during Hasina’s landmark visit next week.
“Three treaties will be signed during the visit (and) these are agreement on mutual legal assistance on criminal offences, agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons and agreement on combating international terrorism, organised crime and illegal drug trafficking,” Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said in Dhaka Thursday.
Moni added that the two neighbours will also sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on power swapping.
