Baisoya overall leader in Asia Pacific Junior Golf, team second
August 4th, 2011 - 7:29 pm ICT by IANSBangkok, Aug 4 (IANS) Honey Baisoya was once again the steadiest of the Indian youngsters as he kept his lead and was also the overall (Category A and B) leader in the 32nd Asia-Pacific Junior Golf Championships at the Royal Hills Golf Resort and Spa Thursday.
The 14-year-old Delhi golfer, Baisoya shot a one-under par 71 on the strength of three birdies on the back nine for an even par 216 for three rounds.
On a hot and humid day, Baisoya saw his lead cut to one as Thai Kwanchai Kongtavee with a 69 closed the gap.
Baisoya’s fine performance also lifted the Boys team into second place, up from overnight second. Baisoya’s 71 along with Category A golfers, Syed Saqib Ahmed (75) and Trishul Chinappa (77) saw India in second place at 14-over 662. But Thailand, aided by Kwanchai’s 69 and Nanfa’s 71 took their total to three-under 645 and extended their lead to 14 shots. Chinese Taipei (664) was third, just two behind India.
Chinappa slumped with a 77 and dropped to ninth place with a total of 222. Two Thais, Nanfa Somnuek and Smithi Teeratrakul shared the lead at 217.
Among girls, India moved into third place and were in the running for a medal. Gurbani Singh (73) shone with a fine performance and with her partner Meher Atwal’s 78 and India now total 305, behind Thailand’s 288 and Chinese Taipei’s 295. Hong Kong at 307 is fourth.
In Catgorry A girls, Gurbani (151) was seventh, eight shots behind leaders Thailand’s Supamas Sangchan and Pinyada Kuvanun at 143.
In Category B girls , Aditi Ashok (81) was 11th at 160. In Category C boys, Karandeep Kochar was tenth at 166 (81, 85).
