Chandigarh, Aug 26 (IANS) Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Friday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s personal intervention in securing early pardon for Devender Pal Singh Bhullar who is on death row for a terror attack on former Indian Youth Congress president Maninderjit Singh Bitta.
In a letter to the prime minister, Badal urged him to secure pardon for Bhullar from the death sentence. He said this was essential for the sentiments and feelings of the entire Sikh community.
This is the first time that Badal has written to the prime minister on behalf of the Punjab government to officially seek clemency for Bhullar. He said Bhullar’s case needed to be viewed with deep humanitarianism and sympathy.
Belonging to the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) terrorist outfit, Bhullar was sentenced to death for masterminding a 1993 car bomb attack in front of the Youth Congress office in New Delhi that killed 12 people. Bitta was among those injured in the attack.
