Australia’s gameplan backfired: Coach Nielsen

October 20th, 2008 - 9:24 pm ICT by IANS

Mohali, Oct 20 (IANS) Australian coach Tim Nielsen said their gameplan of chasing 516 to win the second Test against India on the fourth day backfired.Australia started aggressively putting on 49 runs through Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich, but soon lost the plot and were 141 for five at end of day’s play.

Neilsen said the Australian strategy in the second innings was to take the fight into the Indian camp.

“We wanted to knock off their line and length by trying to chase the target. We succeeded initially but then wickets fell,” he said.

Australia might be staring defeat but Nielsen insisted that all is not lost.

“We will stretch ourselves to bat out on the last day of the match,” Neilsen said.

“If possible, we will try to win. The game is not necessarily lost.”

The Aussie coach said that India dominated proceedings Monday.

“Ishant (Sharma) and Harbhajan (Singh) bowled well today. Australia failed to exert pressure on the Indians consistently like the Indians did.”
