Australian minister rules out uranium export to IndiaSeptember 9th, 2008 - 8:04 pm ICT by IANS
Chennai, Sep 9 (IANS) Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith Tuesday ruled out selling uranium to India and said his country will not supply it to countries that are not signatories to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).“India is one of the countries (that have not signed the NPT) and Australia has no plan of reviewing its policy on uranium supply,” Smith said in the Tamil Nadu capital Chennai, where he began a five-day visit to India Tuesday.
However, he said, in the case of dual use of materials - for civilian and defence purpose- the Australia government would permit exports on a case-to-case basis.
He said the relationship between India and Australia should not be decided on one mineral alone.
The relation between both the countries should be deepened further, he said.
