Gandhinagar, April 18 (IANS) An elderly man who was among a group of senior citizens, who were assaulted by the police as they were protesting on a road through which Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy was to pass, was able to meet Modi on the matter — thanks to a directive of the Gujarat High Court.
Praful Desai, who had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the high court alleging violation of fundamental rights of senior citizens in Vadodara, met Modi April 2, government pleader Prakash Jani said Monday when the case came up for hearing.
Desai told Modi about the assault and inaction of the authorities. He said the chief minister assured him of remedial action.
The court had earlier directed Jani to arrange the meeting while hearing the PIL alleging violation of fundamental rights of senior citizens and lack of civil amenities in the city of Vadodara.
Desai had submitted that he and other senior citizens were manhandled by the police when they were carrying out a silent protest on a road through which the convoy of the chief minister was to pass.
Desai added that civic amenities in Vadodara, like drinking water and sewage system, were far from satisfactory and the city’s municipal corporation was negligent.
After hearing him, the chief justice had said that Desai could meet the chief minister and put the grievances before him.
Desai was willing, and the court asked the government pleader to arrange for the meeting.
