Assam killers arrested in Meghalaya
February 11th, 2011 - 12:36 am ICT by IANSShillong, Feb 10 (IANS) Meghalaya Police Thursday arrested two senior leaders of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) who were the prime accused in the massacre of 21 people in Assam last year.Haijeng, “commander” of the NDFB’s “eastern command” in Assam’s Sonitpur district and “sergeant major” Mwdwi of the “western Command” and two “corporals”, Nwajar and Mukul Boro, were arrested from Byrnihat on the Assam-Meghalaya border.
“All these militants have sneaked into India from Bangladesh. Police have seized mobile phones and demand notes of the NDFB from their possession,” Superintendent of Police Ri-Bhoi district, Claudia A. Lyngwa told IANS.
She said the arrested rebels were the prime accused the in the cold-blooded murder of 21 people in Assam’s Sonitpur district and the kidnapping of Vilas Warkare, an Indian Forest Service officer in Arunachal Pradesh last year.
Haijeng and his men belong to the anti-talks faction of the NDFB. In November last year, Haijeng and his men killed 21 people and injured many more for the death of one Bodo villager.
The anti-talks faction of NDFB has warned that for one death of a Bodo tribal they would take the lives of 20 “Indian” citizens.
“It’s a big breakthrough and we hope that with the arrests the NDFB would be weakened further,” Lyngwa said.
