Ash, fungus in Delhi’s fasting flour samples
April 14th, 2011 - 12:35 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 13 (IANS) Nearly a week after 222 people were hospitalised and one died after consuming buckwheat flour (kuttu ka atta), the Delhi government Wednesday said that 15 of the 72 analysed samples were found to be adulterated.
In a report prepared by the director, prevention of food adulteration, it was found that chemical Aflatoxin was mixed in two cases while in other instances, insoluble ash, and fungus were found.
“The government has filed two cases in court and other cases are being promptly processed,” Health Minister A.K. Walia said.
A 58-year-old man died of food poisoning after he ate food items prepared from buckwheat flour in east Delhi April 6 and about 222 people were hospitalised after consuming similar food.
Most of the victims ate buckwheat flour items when breaking the day-long fast observed as part of Navratri celebrations.
“The sample lifted from Murari Lal and Nand Kishore Mittal in Bada Bazar in Shahdara were found adulterated. They have been arrested,” Walia said.
“Sixteen other cases will be filed soon,” he added.
