Arrested Sun journalists can return to work
February 17th, 2012 - 11:46 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Feb 17 (IANS) News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch has said that suspensions had been lifted on Sun newspaper employees arrested over allegations of payments to police officers, The Telegraph reported Friday.
In an email, he said a Sunday version of the paper - The Sun on Sunday - would launch “very soon”.
Murdoch visited The Sun’s newsroom Friday in an attempt to reassure staff that he will not close or sell the paper following the arrest of senior staff members over alleged corrupt payments.
He told colleagues the newspaper was “part of me” and described it as “one of our proudest achievements”.
Murdoch also gave his firm backing to the members of staff arrested by saying “everyone is innocent unless proven otherwise.”
Five Sun journalists, including the deputy editor, picture editor and chief reporter, were held by Scotland Yard detectives Saturday on suspicion of making improper payments to police and public officials.
The Sun is a daily national tabloid newspaper published in Britain and owned by News Corporation.
